Deep sadness at Sean’s death
There was profound regret in his native Carlow at the death on Saturday,
December 12, 1999., at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, Dublin, of local businessman Seán Donnelly, 24 Castle Street, Carlow.
Mr. Donnelly (67) had carried on a general shop trade at Castle Street
for the past 40 years. He had been in failing health for the past four
years.
A man of quiet disposition, Seán was very popular within the local
community. He was secretary of the Workman’s Club at Browne Street, Carlow, for 35
years. In that capacity he was most efficient and conscientious. Failing
health forced him to relinquish the position in recent years. In a general sense, Seán Donnelly had a life-long loyalty to the
Workman’s Club and its proud historical traditions.
An outdoor type who enjoyed a simple lifestyle and lived life to the
full, Seán was an oarsman with Carlow Rowing Club in his younger days and
was a keen follower of all sports.
He served his time to the hardware trade with Gillespie’s of Carlow and
later worked as a commercial traveller for a number of years until he went
into business for himself. He opened for business on December 13, 1958. Seán and his wife, Allie,
built up a successful enterprise over the past four decades dealing in green
grocery, light hardware, fuel, fruit, fancy goods and, initially,
stationary.
Outside of his working life, Seán served for many years as a member of
the Carlow branch of Order of Malta and travelled to Lourdes in his younger
days to look after invalids.
His remains were removed to The Cathedral of the Assumption, Carlow,
where they were received by Fr. Bill Kemmy, CC. Fr. Christopher, O.F.M. (Cap.) a family friend, celebrated the Requiem
Mass.
In a homily, Fr. Christopher paid tribute to the Seán’s many fine
qualities.
Burial took place afterwards to St. Mary’s cemetery, Carlow.
A guard of honour was formed on both occasions by members of the
Workman’s Club while uniformed members of the Carlow Order of Malta also
attended.
Mr. Donnelly is survived by his wife, Allie, daughter Mrs. Emer Kelly (Knocknagee,
Carlow), mother Mrs. Elizabeth Donnelly, sister Mrs. Eilish Dowling (both
Marysville, Hanover, Carlow), by his son-in-law Michael, brothers-in-law,
sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and his many friends. His father, the late
Mr. John Donnelly, was a secondary teacher at the C.B.S. in Carlow - he died
in 1983.
