Images of Graiguecullen

Thomas James Nolan (b. 1909) in Graiguecullen standing in front of what I believe was his boyhood home at No 17 Maryborough Street taken c.1970.
We would like to know where this house was located and if anyone remembers it.

This image taken sometime in the late 19th century. It shows my grandparents, John Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Sheil Nolan standing in the doorway of his store, "J.J. Nolan" which was on Maryborough Street in Graigue. Gentleman in the middle unknown.

This was also Brennan's pub in Graiguecullen on the corner of Maryboro Street / Morrin's Lane and was taken a bit earlier than the view from the bridge (below). I believe Michael and Mary Brennan from Castlecomer had purchased this pub in 1892 , they also had two farms near Derrymoyle. In 1902 Mary Brennan was shot dead in the house. She was 48 years old. Brennans is situated 30 yards from Glovers. Recently the Brennan family sold the pub, it is now under new management. Source Michael Purcell

As people watch from the wall of Graigue Bridge in 1892 as a procession prepares to leave the old parish church (alongside the trees) in Maryboro Street for the "Killeshin Sunday", (1st Sunday in May) celebrations. The picture was taken from the upstairs window of what was then the Poor Clare Convent. The dark roof is the thatch over Glover's Pub (now Bradleys). The adjoining large building is the parochial house (priest's house). In 1821 Pope Puis V11 passed a decree that a Plenary Indulgence would be dispensed to all who between sunrise and sunset visited the Holy Cross Church in Killeshin. Source of info Michael Purcell

Governey's Boot Factory Outing c.1920's

I have a picture of what looks to be an outing for the workers of Governey's boot factory. There is no date but I assume it to be late 30's to early 40's?? Maybe someone could name a few of the faces. Picture was taken on Graiguecullen Bridge with 'The Tatch' in the background.

Captain John Butler
A young girl looks out from one of the top windows as Captain John Butler stands at the entrance to his thatched pub, formerly Glovers. No. 5 Maryborough Street, Graiguecullen; from the sign to the right of the door we learn that John also traded as a grocer and tea merchant. He claimed his premises was, 'where better drink won't gel the better of you'. Samuel Glover, who wrote the song 'The Rose of Tralee', lived in this house. I would like to thank the present owners Bradleys for the photo.
