Hemp Growing in Carlow
A hemp field
in Côtes-d'Armor, Brittany, France (Europe's largest
hemp producer)
This 7ft high crop grown at the Institute farm in Oak Park,
Carlow. Is hemp, now in its third year of trials as a
possible farm crop in Ireland. The yield from the Irish hemp
crops is up to the level of that obtained in the traditional
hemp growing areas of France, Germany and Italy. The fibre
from the crop is used in the production of shoelaces, twine
and very high-quality paper. Dr. Ml. Neenan of the Crop
Husbandry Division, photographed here, is responsible for
trials on this and other new crops in the institute.
