The late Jim O'Brien

Introduction to Eire Og. Friends and Neighbours 1986

This publication is dedicated to the memory of the late James O'Brien. It was Jim's ambition to record both the memory of Car low's Streets and more importantly the people of these areas who have helped to shape Carlow to what it is today.

Under the guidance of An Coste Stair of Eire Og CLG (Dermot O'Brien, Kathleen O'Brien, James Brady, P.C.; Nancy O'Brien) our Dept. of Labour-sponsored research team comprising of: Adel Delaney, Karen Doran, Nuala Foley, Joan Gaffney, Robert Hayden, Sandra James, Jo. Kirwan, Esther Moore, Karen O'Hagan and Eithne Ware, has covered the areas of Accommodation Road, Bridge Street, Bridewell Lane, Brewery Lane, Little Barrack Street, New Street, Pollerton Road, Potato Market and Staplestown Road.

The basis for our research is from the U.D.C. rate payers book of 1940. This year was selected chiefly because the information obtained could be verified by the direct descendants of those listed. The house numbers used are those from the 1940 rate books.

An Coiste Stair would like to thank Carlow U.D.C., the Dept. of Labour, the Manpower Service and the girls on the Teamwork Scheme. A very sincere thanks to the people of Carlow who have contributed so much to this publication especially those who loaned to us their photographs and to Nan Shaw whose poetry can be enjoyed throughout this publication.

Over 500 families have been researched and no doubt we have omitted some people to whom we offer our sincere apologies.
