- January 03, 1903
- At the Carlow petty Sessions the Right Hon Henry Bruen presiding
William Nolan Carpenter was summoned at the instance of guardians of
Shillelagh union for 9 9s in respect of the support of his father as an
inmate of the Shillelagh union infirmary Defendant stated that up to his
marriage he had always contributed toward his fathers support The Bench
was of the opinion that the guardians were remiss in not applying to
defendant till March last and gave a decree for an amount calculated at
2s per week.
- Patrick Farrell of Bridge street Tullow died on Nov 17th.
- The Rev Matthew Tracey pastor of Rosenaills died on the 16th He was
A native of Carlow and for nearly thirty years was in the sacred
ministry He was for two years on the Scotch mission He then returned to
Clonbullosue where he remained twenty-three years. He was transferred to
Rosenaills about three years ago.
- April 18, 1903,
- Mr John Nolan Rathgar died Feb 16 aged 81 years Mr Nolan was a
native of Carlow and a member of a family which gave to the church
Father John Nolan of Kildare and the Very Rev E W Burke of Bagnalstown
He was a man of wonderful I physique most retentive memory and on
incidents in O’Connells time he was a mine of information.

- Clara Gernon of Carlow daughter of the late
John and Mary Gernon and
grandniece of the late James Saunders of Carlow and Corderry, County
Louth died on April 7 At the quarter sessions which opened in Carlow on
the 8th there was only one case and that of theft.
- May 16, 1903
- Brigid Wrafter eldest daughter of
William Wrafter of Knockthomasdies
on April 11th
- Mary Hughes wife of
Timothy Hughes of Ballinabrana a member of the
county council and mother of Edward Hughes chairman of the rural
district council of Slieveargy a member county council and a Justice the
peace died on April 15 Mrs Hughes herself was a member of the Carlow
Board of guardians the district council and the visiting committee of
the ladies committee for visiting nurse children She was a sister of
John Byrne or Clonagh a member of the Queens county council and
Patrick
Byrne of Coolenagh a member of the Carlow board of guardians The death
occurred on the 9th.
- Death of Nora M E Davoren only daughter of
Joseph Davoren of Carlow
She was 15 years old
- May 23, 1903
- Rev Denis Kearney
for many years chancellor of the Pittsburgh
diocese died in Pittsburgh last week He was born at Carlow Ireland in
1827 ordained in 1856 and in the same year came to Pittsburgh
- June 06, 1903,
Patrick Nolan of Benneberry Carlow, second eldest son of John Nolan died
on May 4.
Mrs Byrne of Donore has been co-opted a member of the Rural District
Council of Carlow in succession to the late Mrs Hughes. At 3 Vernon
street Dublin Edward Murphy aged 21 years late student of Technical Schools and
formerly of Kyleballyhue Carlow.
June 13, 1903
- The position left vacant at the Albert institute Glasnevin by the
appointment of Andrew Nolan a Carlow man to be agricultural instructor
for Wicklow county has been filled by another county man Michael Tuite
of Killcloney Borris who is only in his 21st year.
- John Howe master of the Carlow workhouse for many years has resigned
He was a popular official.
- June 20, 1903,
- James Doyle an old and respected Carlow man died on May 11 at the
Shamrock hotel at the age of 69 years His death severed many old and
treasured association The remains were interred in St Mary’s cemetery
Carlow after services in the cathedral The chief mourners were Michael
and Patrick Doyle sons P J Byrne son in law, and Urban District
Councillor Thomas Murphy, brother in law.
- August 29, 1903
- The Third Annual Show of the Carlow Agricultural Society was held on
Monday in fine weather and attracted a very large audience.
- October
03, 1903
- On Wednesday an inquest was held by Dr Joseph Nolan coroner at Carlow
Graigue, on the body of John Brennan, a farmer, who, the day previous,
committed suicide by cutting his throat. Apprehended loss owing to the
difficulty of saving the Home of his crops preyed upon his mind of late. His
wife missed him on Tuesday morning early and on making a search she
found him lying on the floor with his throat Cut. The jury found that he
had committed suicide while temporarily insane and they passed a
resolution of condolence with his wife and family.

- An Irish Bishop for Sierra Leone
- The holy see has appointed the Most Rev Dr O’Gorman of the Society
of the Holy Ghost to the newly formed bishopric of Sierra Leone writes
the Freemans Journal
Dr O’Gorman is a very young bishop being only 37 years of age He was
born in Hacketstown County Carlow In 1889 He was one of the many
brilliant students who won distinction for Blackrock in the early
distinct of the intermediate At the completion of his literary course he
went to Paris to study philosophy and theology He was an ardent student
of the works of Thomas Aquinas. Indeed he was credited by his class
fellows with knowing the Summa by heart Ordained priest in 1890 he was
immediately appointed professor of theology and scripture in the mother
hose of his
society In 1896 he was sent to the United States to found and direct a
house of studies for the students of his society in that province From
his quiet retreat in Cornwell’s near Philadelphia he has just been
called to found and govern a bishopric on the west
coast of Africa The mission of Sierra Leone has for many years been en
trusted to the Society of the Holy Ghost The mission developed rapidly
under the late Father Browne and its works are sure to get a new impetus
under the vigorous direction of its brilliant young bishop.
The following items
were found in Kentucky Irish American. (Louisville, Ky.) 1898-1968,
January 03, 1903
Bridget Brennan aged twenty who some time ago was
an inmate of the Carlow Lunatic Asylum shot her mother dead at Carlow
Grainge and then attempted to drown herself in the Barrow. She was
observed rushing wildly to the river but it was only after she was
rescued and taken home that the previous crime was discovered.
