Stranorlar Church of Ireland Parish | and Saint Mary's
Church | Stanorlar Parish has been in existence since the
late 1500's. The first date so far discovered is 1609 with a
reference to the Church | land and Churchyard. In 1733 the
Church was enlarged, slated and seated. The glebe house was
built in 1812 at a cost of £692.

Stanorlar was a District Curacy and the first recorded
Curate was the Reverend Robert Connoll. It was created a
Perpetual Curacy on | February 21st 1799. The last Perpetual
Curate was the Revered ROBERT BUTT, father of ISAAC BUTT; he
died in 1829 and is buried under | the South Transept which
was built in 1863.

In 1835 the parish was constituted a Rectory and Vicarage.
The Reverend Thomas Fullerton who succeeded the Reverend
ROBERT | BUTT as Curate became the first Rector. He served
the Parish from 1829 until he died in 1880 and was the
longest serving minister, on record | in the Parish.

The Reverend JAMES ALEXANDER CRAWFORD became Rector in
October 1885 and remained in the Parish for 24 years during
which time | the graveyard was enlarged and walled in and
there were considerable improvements made to the Church.

A new bell was erected in 1922 by the Parishioners in memory
of the men who served and of those who died in the Great War
of 1914 - | 1918. The bell it replaced now stands in the
entrance hall of the Church and was cast in Paris in 1677.

In 1999 a peal of eight bells was installed. They came from
Holy Trinity Church, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon and were cast
in 1899.
