"In Dingle there was a British army post. In the year 1793 there was a major agitation against excessive rent by tennats of the Mullins estate. At a big demonstration in Dingle in June, 1793, the soldiers, on Mullins orders, opened fire, killing fourteen and wounding many others."

On a day in June, 1793, many people assembled in Dingle's main street in the belief that Tithes (a 10% annual tax to the Established Church) would be abolished locally. It was declared to be an illegal assembly. A contemporary account states that after John Griffin of Athacarrible, Kinard, fired at Captain Mullins (and missed), Capt.Mullins (son of the later Lord Ventry) directed the company of the 34th Foot Regiment to fire on the crowd. The following were the fatalities: John Griffin (above), Thomas Fitzgerald of Vicarstown, Dunquin, Thomas Kennedy of Ballyveheen, Maurin, Ballyferriter, John Baker of Cahirdorgan, Kilmalkeder, Ballyferriter, John Thomas of Gurrane, Richard Thomas of Kilquane, and Mrs.Gloster (formerly-Fitzgerald) of Glens, Dingle.
