Griffiths Index |
This lists Griffiths data for all townlands in Killiney Civil Parish, within the present Castlegregory Catholic Parish. Thanks to Brendan Lynch for transcribing and contributing this work.
Griffiths lists all heads of households and includes the name of the occupier, the name of the lessor from whom the occupier rented and a description of the property. Some individuals appear more than once if the person occupied more than one property, usually a house and/or more than one parcel of land. The original records give extra information including the size of the plot of land and the valuation of the property.
Properties may be identified by number on maps which were prepared at the time and which are still available in some libraries.
The Valuation Office, Dublin (see their website; www.valoff.ie) holds the "cancelled valuation books" which trace changes in ownership (occupancy) of properties from c. 1850 to the present. These books may be consulted, at the office, on payment of a fee.
Some occupier's names have an attached nickname to differentiate persons of the same name in the area. These names appear in: Bealoideas, The Journal of the Folklore of Ireland Society 1938. While the derivation is not always clear, many are based on: (1) an abbreviation of the first name (Paddy, Tom), (2) the first name of the occupier's father, or mother, or another ancestor (3) appearance (mor = big; beag = small; liath or ban = grey haired; rua = red haired), (4) occupation (gow = blacksmith).
