Photo taken on June 22nd 1922 outside St Mel’s Cathedral,
Longford Town. The Guard of Honour is provided by the National Army. McKeon (also spelt McEoin) had
been commander of the Longford Flying Column. He was known as the ‘Blacksmith of Ballinalee’ after the
county Longford village from which he came. He was later Minister for Justice. He unsuccessfully stood for
the Presidency in 1945 and 1959.
