Drumcullen is in a
rural area- a fertile farmland of rather smallish fields enclosed by
hedges of a variety of bushes, mainly whitethorn. The land is of
round, rolling hills (which rarely rise above 200 feet in altitude)
separated by meadowland and marsh. The marshes in many areas have
been artificially produced through the digging off of peat for fuel
in times gone by. Farms are generally pasture with some cropping,
usually potatoes and barley-the climate being unsuitable for
ripening wheat. Quite a lot of fruit is grown, particularly apples.
In recent years mushroom growing in houses has flourished.
