Church Records
are the primary genealogical source for pre-civil
registration. (Registration began in 1837). They include
births, christenings, marriages, deaths and burials. These
records were kept in registers, commonly called Parish
Registers. Each Parish kept it's own records. Catholic
Parish Registers mainly contain christening and marriage
records. The Family History Center has microfilm
copies of many Catholic parish registers, search under
IRELAND, [county], [parish].
Before you can
search the Parish Registers you need to know which Parish
your ancestors lived in and what was their religious
affiliation. Most Parishes were villages with a church and a
priest. Larger towns have more than one Parish.
Although at
this time the FHL has very few church records
from County Cork (keep checking back as they are always
microfilming new sources)
