An Education

Someone who also believes, very strongly in education of all kinds, is Aidan Murray, the nicest schoolmaster I have ever met. Listening to Aidan in the hall of the C.B.S school was certainly an education for me.

If only Aidan would write it down, especially some of the background stories to the “Tidy Towns” competitions. What really goes on when a town is tidied up!

Aidan Murray and his extremely nice wife, Madge, know everyone in Carlow, and are so helpful to strangers like us. We were sorry we couldn’t stay for the Piazza, Madge, but next time we’ll give you fair warning.

Aidan was one of the people who fought for the new technical college and he told us it would cost about 1¼ Million and would of course benefit the local industries and would probably attract new ones. When I asked what would happen to the old Shaw tech., he said it might be turned into a library or Government offices.

As we sat talking to Aidan and his friend Liam in the School Hall we noticed the stage curtain nicely painted and Aidan told us that the Carlow Operatic Society were rehearsing their forthcoming production of the “Merry Widow”. It will be staged in the Town Hall from May 24 until June 2nd. Aidan himself never got beyond the chorus.

The children in Aidan Murray’s class were excused homework in our honour.

They had a most enjoyable day anyway, listening to each other.  Aidan believes in letting them address the class and one little boy who had been up to the Spring Show saw things there which grown-up’s didn’t. Do you know how many yellow tractors there were on view?

I have never seen a man who loved his job so much as Aidan, and who was so suited to it. The children adored him, and it’s no wonder they work and learn from him – I certainly did.

His stories of the Chelsea Pensioners and the gifts George Bernard Shaw made to the local convent all were of historical interest.

If I could write down all Aidan told us, the diary would be full.

My name is Vesty McGrath, I lived in St Killians Cres Carlow for years and went to the old & new St Joseph's School on Station road  & the CBS. This information refers to the article above on Aidam (Chesty) Murray of  Dublin St Carlow. Attached is a paper clipping photo of Mr. Murray you were asking did any one know the pupils in the above picture. We have Jim Kelly, Pollerton Rd son of Dinnis who worked in The Barrow Mills  & Liz Kelly. Behind Jim Kelly is David Doyle. I think he liver near Tinryland. He worked for Dan Morrissey.  Standing behind Mr. Murray is Mick Moore also from Pollerton Rd son of footballer Buller Moore.

Regards Sylvester (Vesty)  McGrath.,  Murray's Sweet Shop, another bit of Carlow gone. I worked every Saturday when I went to the CBS & got 2  shillings for the day - 8.30 am to 9pm but you were glad of the few bob. David Doyle died about two years ago  R.I.P
