Adam le Bretton (Breton), former sheriff of Carlow. |

Sheriff of Carlow |
Nature of Request: |

Nature of Endorsement: |
[On face] Let it be ordered to the treasurer and barons
of Ireland that if they find that he expended the money
to the profit ... |
Places mentioned: |
County Carlow, [Ireland]; Carlow Castle, [County Carlow,

People mentioned: |

Date derivation: |
The petition is dated to c. 1314
following the dating made by Sayles (Affairs, p.72). The
petition itself refers to 5 Edw. II (1311-12), and this
is evidently in the recent past. |

Petitioners: |
Richard de Eccleshale (Eccleshall), clerk. |
Name(s): |
de Eccleshale (Eccleshall), Richard |
Addressees: |
King. |
Occupation: |
clerk |
Nature of Request: |
Eccleshale requests that the chancellor be commanded
to ordain a remedy for him for the misprison
concerning the prebend of St Columba of Tulllow in
the cathedral church of St Lazerian, Leighlin as
Balscote has refused to suffer Eccleshale to have
possession the prebend despite a definitive sentence
passing against him, and holds it be force and has
appealed to Rome. |
Nature of Endorsement: |
[None]. |
Places mentioned: |
Tylagh (Tullow), [County Carlow, Ireland]; Ireland;
Leighlin, [County Carlow, Ireland]; Rome, [Italy]. |
People mentioned: |
John de Balscote. |
Date derivation: |
The petition dates to 1342 as the prebend was
granted to the petitioner, and the grant to Balscote
was revoked on 2 March 1342 (CPR 1340-3, pp.387,
389). The secret seal warrant possibly suggests that
the petition dates to 1343 as it is dated in its
dating clause to 28 December, and although no regnal
year is given, the guard is stamped '17 Edw. 3' (C
81/1331/32) |

Petitioners: |
Richard de Eccleshale, clerk. |
Name(s): |
de Eccleshale, Richard |
Addressees: |
King and council. |
Occupation: |
clerk |
Nature of Request: |
Richard de Eccleshale states that the King gave him
the prebend of Tullow [the prebend of St Columba of
Tullow in the church of St Laserian at Old Leighlin]
in Ireland, and that he sued to have it on the
King's collation against the Archbishop of Dublin in
court Christian and won, but that he is disturbed in
his possession of the prebend by one John de
Balscote, who has entered the prebend with force and
arms and is impleading him in the court of Rome,
although he is the King's officer and should not do
such things against his oath and his liege lord. He
requests such a remedy as will be an example to
others. |
Nature of Endorsement: |
[None] |
Places mentioned: |
Tillagh (Tullow, Tullagh), [County Carlow], Ireland;
[Old Leighlin, County Carlow, Ireland]. |
People mentioned: |
[Alexander de Bicknor], Archbishop of Dublin; John
de Balscote. |
Date derivation: |
Dated by Connolly to 1343, with reference to C
47/10/20/4, writs on this matter to the chancellor
of Ireland and the Archbishop of Dublin. However,
dated on the guard to 18 Edward III (1344-5), and on

Petitioners: |
Walter, Lord Mauny. |
Name(s): |
Lord Mauny, Walter |
Addressees: |
King and council. |
Nature of Request: |
Lord Mauny requests that a suitable remedy be
ordained for him as he ought to have his rents,
farms and other profits from his lands in
Ireland for the repair of his castle of Carlow
which is in the marches of Leinster. But for the
last two years the justices and ministers of the
king have assigned these rents, farms and other
profits at their will so that he does not
receive anything for the maintenance of the
castle that has fallen into disrepair.
|
Nature of Endorsement: |
An answer to this bill was given in full
parliament. |
Places mentioned: |
Carlow, [County Carlow, Ireland]; Marches of
Leinster, [Ireland]. |
People mentioned: |
Constable of the castle of Carlow. |
Date derivation: |
The petition has been assigned the
dates 1368-72 on the guard but no reason has
been given to justify this. Since the petition
is written in a later fourteenth century style
and there is no indication that it was enrolled
(a characteristic of early fourteenth century
petitions) it would seem a date of c. 1370 is
quite plausible. |
