Hugh, James, and
Thomas Conran in
Griffith’s Valuation
1852:
According to this
document,
a total of
nine properties in
Hacketstown at this time were leased to or leased from Conrans:
two in Lower Hacketstown in the name of Hugh Conran; two in Main
Street and two in Bridge Lane in the name of James Conran; and
three in Bridge Lane in the name of Thomas Conran. It is not
clear whether there were only three individuals - one of each
name, each holding all the properties listed under that that
name – or whether there were two (or more) individuals with the
same first and last names, each of them holding at least one of
the properties listed under that name.
According to
Hacketstown RC parish records, at or prior to this time, it
appears that there were four adults named Hugh Conran (two in
Hacketstown, one in Kilconnal, and one more, no address
recorded) and four adults named Thomas Conran (one in Bortle,
two in Hacketstown, and one more, no address recorded); it is
also possible that some of these Hugh’s and Thomases could have
married twice, meaning that there could have been fewer than
four of either.
Therefore it is
difficult to say exactly which Hugh or which Thomas really owned
which property! However, there is only one adult James Conran in
the RC church records at or prior to this time, and his address
is Hacketstown, so it seems likely that he was the James Conran
named in Griffith’s Valuation of 1852.
Good luck to the
descendants of these gentlemen – you will have to take it from
here! - KC-
