Rathdonnell's Rathvilly
Tenantry.
A letter has
been received from Lord Rathdonnell, who is at present staying at
Bowden Hall, Market Hallors, England, intimating that he has written
instructions to his agent, Mr William Johnson, Prumplestown, Carlow,
to allow the tenants on that portion of his estate situate in
Rathvilly, county Carlow, a reduction of 15 per cent on their present
rents, what they have already demanded through memorial submitted to
his lordship.
[Note added
by Michael Purcell 2012 - should read "Great Bowden Hall, Market
Harborough", this letter led to a debate in the columns of the
Nationalist during the following weeks, with Father John Phelan, the
newly appointed parish priest of Rathvilly leading the way and
attempting to stir up trouble, it appears he was ignored.]

Mathew McGrath, 1857 - 1886.

Death of Mr Mathew S. McGrath.
We deeply regret to announce the untimely demise
of Mr Mathew McGrath, eldest son of Mr Daniel McGrath, Dublin Street,
Carlow.
Mr McGrath, aged 29, died at his residence, 36
North Great George's Street, Dublin, from acute inflammation of the
lungs on the 19th March, 1886.
The deceased gentleman, early in life attached
himself to literary pursuits, and very soon attained a high position
as a sporting writer. His articles on turf matters were models of
cultured English in a graphic style.
Mr McGrath was for many years on the staff of the
Irish Sportsman. He was also connected with the English sporting
Press, He was personally very popular, and he will be mourned by
numerous friends.
On Sunday morning, shortly after 10. o' clock,
his remains were removed from George's Street for interment at
Glasnevin. As might have been expected there was a very large
attendance, those present including many prominent citizens, as well
as a numerous gathering of those indentified with various forms of
sport.
Mathew, it may be truly said enjoyed a very wide
popularity, and by his brethren of the sporting Press was very warmly
esteemed.
For his young widow the utmost sympathy is felt.
The cortege was of considerable dimensions.
The chief mourners were -- Daniel McGrath,
father; D. J. McGrath and James McGrath, brothers; L. Dunbar, V. J. R.
Dunbar, and Lionel Dunbar (brothers-in-law), Rev. M. Brennan, and Pat
Brennan, (uncles), John Bolger, Joe McGrath, B.A., Mathew McGrath, and
Edward McGrath, (cousins).
