The Death of
Dr. Joseph V. Ryan.
Carlow.
We deeply regret
to announce the death of the above highly esteemed member of the medical
profession, which took place rather unexpectedly at his residence, Grosvenor
Place, Carlow, early on Wednesday morning.
Deceased had
been in failing health for some twelve months, and no one knew better than
himself that his days were numbered.
In fact he so
expressed it on more than one occasion, but with his love for his practice,
both private and in carrying out his public appointments, he struggled on to
the end in the most resolute and courageous manner.
His death was a
great shock to the townspeople who had seen him only the day before ; as
usual visiting his patients and going through the ordinary routine of his
daily work at the County Home.
The shock was
all the more painful to his own family who lose a loving husband and a most
devoted father, and with them we join in the sympathy shared by every one
who knew him in the great affliction it has pleased God to send them.
Dr. Ryan was
qualified in 1888, and shortly afterwards came to Carlow from the Queen's
College, Cork, where he had been Lecturer in and Demonstrator of Anatomy,
and also Professor of Mathematics in St. Finbarr's College.
From the very
beginning Dr. Ryan acquired the confidence of the great number of his
patients, and had at all times a very extensive practice.
He was the
Medical Officer of the Carlow Union for the past 18 years, succeeding Dr.
Edward Rawsone when that gentleman resigned the position.
The poor, whom
he loved and devoted his services to, returned his affection and had
implicit belief in his ability to heal their ailments.
He will be sadly
missed in many a home in which his professional knowledge had gained him an
entry.
The chief mourners wer:-

Condolence And
Adjournment.
At a meeting of
the Carlow Board of Health on Monday, Rev. J. Killian, Adm., presiding, the
following resolution was passed on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by
Mr. Edward Doyle, T.D.:-
That we, the
Carlow Board of Health, have heard with feelings of very deep regret of the
death of Dr. J. V. Ryan, Medical Officer of the County Home, and we wish to
record our deep sense of the very great loss the Board has sustained by his
unexpected death, and our deep sympathy with his widow and family in their
bereavement, and as a further mark of respect we hereby adjourn this
meeting".
In speaking to
the resolution Fr. Killian said --- Since our last meeting death has claimed
our esteemed Medical Officer, Dr. Ryan, and the sad duty devolves on me of
proposing that we tender to his family and friends our deep sympathy with
them in the great loss that they have sustained.
They are not
alone in their sense of loss, for the Board has lost a most efficient
officer, the sick and poor have lost a devoted servant, and we who have had
the privilege of his friendship have lost a loyal friend.
It was typical
of the man, that though in failing health - knowing even that the hand of
death was on him - that he stood at his post to the last, fearless and
uncomplaining.
Hence it is that
with a keen sense of personal loss and sorrow we tender to his bereaved
family our sincere sympathy, and place on record our high esteem of one
whose sterling qualities won our friendship and commanded our respect.
The resolution
was passed in respectful silence.
Carlow Urban
Council.
At Tuesday
night's meeting of the Carlow Urban Council, Mr. Michael Governey proposed a
resolution of condolence with the family of the late Dr. Ryan.
Mr. Governey
referred in feeling terms to the passing of the deceased gentleman, and said
the widow and family had the full sympathy of the people of Carlow and
surrounding districts.
Miss Laffan
seconded and the resolution was passed in silence.
On behalf of
himself and the staff, Mr. W.A. Lawler, Town Clerk, associated himself with
the resolution.
Acknowledgement.
Mrs. Dr. Ryan
and Family, of "Grosvenor Place" Carlow, desire to acknowledge most
gratefully the many kind wires and letters of sympathy received on the
occasion of their recent sad bereavement and which proved a great source of
