Keppel family of Fennagh

James Keppel was born in 1712 during the reign of Queen Anne (1702-1714). James' existence is verifiable from his online death record which states his date and place of death as 24 Sep 1789 Fennagh, Carlow, Ireland; his spouse's name as Elizabeth Hayes; his marriage year as 1747; and his year of birth as 1712. James and Elizabeth had seven children born at Fennagh, Carlow -- Ann Kepel (b. abt 1743), George Keppel (b. abt 1748), Mary Kepple (b. abt 1755), William Keppel (b. abt 1756), John Keppel (b. abt 1758), Anne Keppel (b. abt 1760) and Sally Keppel (b. abt 1762). Because of his late appearance in Irish family history records, it is likely that James was an immigrant from England or Europe.

Pray Pardon 1923 Letter in the Pat Purcell Papers.

"Mayo"

Merthur Road , New Farm, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. 26th October 1923.

To- Mr Pack Beresford, Fenagh House, Carlow.

Dear Mr Beresford,

Pray pardon the liberty I am taking in writing you, but under the circumstances it seems the only thing to do.

Two months ago I married a man who gave his name as Thomas de la Pour Pack-Beresford and he says you are his brother.

I would deem it a very great favour if you will write and tell me if this is true.

Of course you may not exist at all, for this man has proved so untruthful and so devoid of the instincts one expects to find in a gentleman that I feel I cannot believe one word he says.

He also tells me he is a widower and I am wondering whether he ever had a wife or if he did is she still living.

If he did and the lady is still alive please let me know and it will relieve me of a lot of worry.

If he has a wife living I have no desire to see him in prison and will merely advise him that I know and that Australia is not a healthy place for him to live in.

Should this man who calls himself your brother have been married before to your knowledge will you please be so very kind as to send me proof.

I need hardly mention that at present I am not living with this man who calls himself my husband nor do I intend to.

Thanking you in anticipation.

With best wishes,

Yours Sincerely ,

Miriam Beresford
