Fr. Laurence (LAR) Fleming, the retired parish priest of Ballyadams, County Laois, died, peacefully, at his home in Teach Moling, Oak Park, Carlow, on Saturday, July 2.

Aged 84 years old, he was originally from Ardattin, Tullow, and moved to Carlow town when he retired in 2000.

He was educated in Knockbeg College and Maynooth College before being ordained in June 1952.

Fr. Fleming served in several parishes in the dioceses, including Clonmore, Clonaslee, the Curragh camp and, finally, Ballyadams.

He was a big, strong athletic man who, in his younger days, enjoyed playing football with Kilbride. Fr. Fleming was a hugely sociable person too and was great for keeping in touch with his many friends.

Fr. Fleming was part of a religious family as his brother, Joe, is parish priest in Clonegal while his sister, Brigid, is a nun. His other siblings include Richard, Gerard, Maire, Ann and Theresa.

Fr. Fleming retired in 2000 but continued to be very active in Carlow town, providing cover for his colleagues by saying Mass and visiting parishioners. A man of deep faith, he remained dedicated to serving his people.

His remains reposed in St. Joseph's Church, Ballyadams, yesterday, Monday, with Requiem Mass being celebrated today, Tuesday, at 2 p.m.

Fr. Fleming is survived by his siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
