Geoghegan Family

The following information, about the Geoghegan Family, was provided by Tony Purcell in September 2022. Apart from Martin Geoghegan the rest of the family listed here are missing from the Carlow Missing Soldiers list.

  • My great-grandfather, Edward Geoghegan, (Hanover, Carlow, Ireland), his brothers James and Michael, and his first cousin Martin were serving with the Royal Dublin Fusilier and fought in the Great War of 1914 - 1918.

    Wife Anne Geoghegan (Moran)
    Hanover, Carlow Town, Co Carlow, Ireland
    Service no. 18738
    Rank: Corporal
    Discharged 1919 residence listed at Hanover, Carlow. Edward lived at 6 Hanover, Carlow.
    Applied for pension but didn't receive one.

    2. James Geoghegan b.1881 d.1928 he is the brother of the above mentioned Edward.

    3. Michael Geoghegan b. 1884 d. 1954 brother of the above mentioned Edward.

    4. Martin Geoghegan b.1881 d.Aug 27th 1914
    Mother: Maria Geoghegan (Moran)

    Died 1914 Marti
    n is the First cousin of the above named Edward. He was involved in the battle of Le Chateau.
    We believe he was one of the 44 men killed in the German ambush near the village of Clary on August 27th 1914. Clary is a village in Hauts-de-France and has about 1,130 residents (2022 figures). Clary is situated Southwest of Montigny-en-Cambrésis, and Southeast of Caullery.

  •  Martin is not mentioned in the book, but, Gerard, (in a recent communication) believes Martin was one of the 44.
