George Furney. Sen.
George Furney (1809-1893) was a Saddler in Tullow St
Carlow town. Emigrated to Australia in 1859. He was buried in Dubbo Old
Cemetery - Myall Road, Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia.
The following
information was posted on IGP Facbook page by Peter Furney:
The Furneys were mainly living around the
Ballickmoyler area in Queen’s County (Laois) where they were millers and
farmers. George’s sister, Margarita, and her husband, John Rorke,
emigrated to Australia (voluntary) with their child James, they were to
go on and have 5 more.
In 1841 George and
wife Anne (née Lawson) came to Australia with four small boys as Free
Settlers, leaving the Tullow Street business to brother James. They
joined George's sister Margarita and husband John Rorke on their
property "The Meadows". Dubbo, NSW. The Furneys moved to Dubbo where
George had a saddlery shop, located at the corner of Macquafrie and
Church street (Westpac Bank Site).
About 1883 the home
was burnt down. Later some of the children became farmers near
"Bunglegumbie". There is still a flour mill, and 4 businesses bearing
the Furney name and even a Furney Street in Dubbo. There are still. to
this day. Furneys in Dubbo. NSW.
