Graiguecullen Children in Drama Final
March 25th 1977
A
Budding Group of Graiguecullen schoolgirls have shown their
talent for drama by reaching the final of the All Ireland Schools
Drama Festival, Feile Scoil Dramaiochta.
The 39 girls who are all about nine years of
age are in third and fourth class of the local National School and
this is the second year running they have reached the final.
Their teacher, Mrs. Aine Hegarty took Brendan
Behan’s short story, ‘The Confirmation Suit’, translated it to Irish
and especially adapted it for the competition.
The half hour play has taken the group
successfully through all the preliminary rounds.
Although the basis of the story remains unchanged, Mrs. Hegarty
had to write in a conversation piece.
The girls completed in the first round in Mew
Ross and were nominated to the provincial final in Kilkenny last
Friday. Again they were successful and received the important
nomination to compete in their own category in the final at the
Player-Wills Theatre, Dublin in April.
The Festival is for national, secondary,
vocational schools etc. and three years ago, the Graiguecullen school
won, for the first time the All-Ireland final. Here again, Mrs.
Hegarty, adapted a short story ‘Jany Mary’.
Mrs. Hegarty, a native of Cork, has been
teaching in school for the past four years and commented that local
curate, Fr. Sean Kelly gives her great help with the children. “I do
the spade work and he adds the sparkle”, she said.
Graiguecullen is the only school from the
Carlow area in this year’s festival. In previous years, schools from
Carlow have taken part and preliminary rounds were held in the county.
The children’s success in reaching this year’s
final was remarked upon at a meeting of Carlow Urban Council on
Tuesday night.
Councillor
John Alcock proposed a vote of congratulations to the school. The
achievement was a great credit to them. He recommended the other
members to see the play. His vote was seconded by Cllr. Jim Nolan.
