Graiguecullen Triangle - is it time to redraw the boundary?

By Suzanne’ Pender

GENERAL Election candidate Jim Townsend has this week called for an extension of the Carlow county boundary beyond the historic limits of the so-called “triangle” in Graiguecullen to take in the new developments and future development lands.

The Labour councillor was highly critical of Laois County Council’s failure to provide basic services to the’ residents of Graiguecullen despite the huge sums in commercial rates they are receiving from the area.

“I predict Carlow County Council will lose tens of million in lost revenue over the next few years to Laois County Council if this trend continues, as businesses and jobs locate there,” he stated.

“Laois County Council seems to be content to grant planning permission and rezone land for housing or other developments without any regard for servicing the future needs of residents and businesses, but are still willing to collect the money from business rates and other tax sources,” Cllr Townsend added.

Such is the scale of development in Graiguecullen that the area is now regarded as the second fastest growing area in all of County Laois after Portlaoise.

“The fact that these areas are not under the control of Carlow County Council has and will continue to lead to problems for residents and new businesses locating there,” stated Cllr Townsend.

“It is well documented that the inhabitants of housing schemes in Graiguecullen which lie in the Co. Laois area are completely forgotten about by Laois County Council.

“Despite the fact that all their water and sewerage is provided for by Carlow County Council, I have people coming to me from houses just outside the town who can’t get roads, footpaths or lighting properly maintained due to the inaction of the Laois Co. Council. However, the Carlow local authorities are powerless to act because it is simply not within their geographic area of responsibility,” Cllr Townsend stated.

“In addition, we have seen recently several large commercial developments built in Graiguecullen which are serving Carlow, but again are just over the Co. Laois boundary.

“The commercial rates from these businesses are going to Laois County Council even though most of their business originates from Carlow,” he said.

“Recent water shortages in Graiguecullen can partially be attributed to huge growth in the demand for water arising from all the new houses and apartments and that planning and development is occurring there in a haphazard, uncoordinated fashion,” claimed Cllr Townsend.
