In June 1886, it was reported that there was a movement to revive the Athletics Sports in Carlow. The Carlow Athletic Sports were held in September 1887, on the Greenbank Track in the town. It was a 300 yard long track which had been specially prepared for the occasion.

There was an event card comprising 19 events in all which offered hop, step and jump, bicycle races, throwing the hammer and a walking race. The handicapper was named as F.B. Dineen. Admission prices were 2 shillings for the reserved enclosure, one shilling for the second enclosure and 6 pence for the third.

The committee were listed as:

Lawler, M. O'Reilly, P.J. Gregan, James Williams, M. McDonnell, T. Hearns, E.T. Mulhall, P. Byrne, James Hosey, T. Kehoe, M. Governey, T.C., W. Bergin, T. Murphy, T.C., R. McDonald, P. Hanlon, P.L.G., John Keating.

The meeting was very successful, although the band of the 11th Hussars could not fulfil the engagement.

Prizes were distributed by Rev. E. Kavanagh the Administrator at Carlow Cathedral. The Athletics meeting was held under the Laws of the Gaelic Athletic Association and the I.C.A.
