Carlow - Graigue-Cullen 1913.
Irish Home Rule party!
The meeting
was filmed in October 1913 when John Dillon M.P. came to Carlow where he
delivered a Home Rule speech. The original film is longer than the
segment now on youtube. In the background of the first segment we can
identify Doyles of The Shamrock home, shop, Public House and
Iron-Foundry.
The
Graiguecullen Temperance Band led the Parade, with the Banner "IRELAND
SOBER IS FREE"
The
gathering was filmed by the Sylvester brothers, they placed several cine
cameras around the town, the film was shown in the Assembly Rooms on
Dublin Street and later at the Palace Cinema, Burrin Street. The
original film was in the custody of a man living on Staplestown Road up
to the 1950s, it was acquired by Mr K. Doyle of The Shamrock. I believe
the original film is today in the custody of his son Michael Doyle. In
1983 I screened the film on a 16mm projector in Carlow Workman's Club.
- The
last frames show Mr Dillon arriving at Carlow Railway Station, the
man on his left is Mr. Michael Governey.
