James (Jim) Nolan

Jim (The Bomber) Nolan died 22 or 23 March 1987. He was found dead in a field . Some reports say he died of a heart attack.. He did a lot for Graigue GAA and he also brought Pongo (from New York) to the parish hall which resulted in today's Bingo which is a great money spinner for the parish. He helped many a person who came to our door to find their ancestors as he was a mound of local information and history.

 Jim Nolan is mentioned in the book  'The Parish of KILLESHIN, Graiguecullen'. 1972. by P. MacSuibhne:
 
"Fr. Sean McWey C.C. and his brother Brendan were outstanding Laois players. Mick, 'Cutchie' Haughney, a great Graiguecullen and Laois footballer, was also a good clubman for Graiguecullen. Uncle of Fr. Denis Haughney now in U.S.A. Ned Hogan, Chapel St., on the Henry St. corner was the father of Willie Hogan, red-haired, and Martin Hogan, both good footballers who made football history with Graigue. Jim Nolan, Henry St., a good organiser for G.A.A. and parish funds is now chairman of Carlow U.D.C."
 
(Note: - Willie Hogan and Martin Hogan are 3rd cousins of Michael Brennan).

The following is an extract from Graiguecullen G.A.A. Club Club History website page:

"Over the years the club had played and trained in many fields around the village, the most famous and best known of which was Fennell’s bog. Around 1953/54 the committee set out to buy its own field.

A finance committee headed by Jim (Bummer) Nolan travelled with men and women from the village to the fairs of Ireland selling tickets for a ‘Bullock for a bob’ to raise the necessary finance. Carnivals in the Bank Field in Carlow were regular events every summer and the Whale that he brought from Fethard-On-Sea in Co. Wexford and charged the people to see is still talked about today! There was also a car raffled and pictured below is Fr. Byrne and Jim Nolan presenting the keys to the lucky winner! (MB - sorry no picture published).

In the mid 50s the club bought land in Graiguecullen from Behan’s of Leinster Lodge, Athy, Co. Kildare. They developed one of the finest playing fields in Leinster. Fr. Maher Park (named after a former P.P.) was officially opened in 1960 with 2 dressing rooms and a walled pitch."

Helping to carrying Jim 'The Bomber' Nolan's coffin over Graigue Bridge are Bernadette Nolan Keating, Sheila Nolan (Paddy's), Ernie Culleton, Maurice Nolan (Joe's), Paddy Price, Michael Nolan (Larry's), Danny Nolan (Jack's), Dinny Nolan (Jim's), Margaret Nolan Cronin, Mick Mayling and Michael Bolton. (March 1987).
