John McQuaide, 1818 - 1897.

The subject of this obituary, John McQuaide, who was married in 1853
to Harriet Wilson, daughter of Carlow businessman, Michael Wilson.
Harriet died in 1879.
John owned a bookshop and business as stamp seller at 42 Dublin
Street (beside the present-day Capuchin Friary), he was a member of
Carlow Town Commissioners, he was also the Register of Marriages for
the town.

Death of Mr John McQuaide.
With deep regret we announce the death, after a brief illness, of
John McQuaide, which occurred at his residence Dublin Street,
Carlow, at an early hour on Monday last.
Deceased who was in his 79th year, was one of the oldest and most
respected representative of local commercial community, and his
death, which was unexpected, is widely and sincerely lamented.
Up to three weeks preceding his death he was in his usual robust
health, his illness commencing with a gastric attack, followed by a
heart affection, which proved fatal.
On the part of his many friends and acquaintances we tender sincere
sympathy to his bereaved family.
The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Wednesday,
when his remains were interred in the family burial ground at Carlow
Church.
The Very Rev. Dean Finley conducted the burial service (assisted by
the Rev. B.S. Radcliffe) and delivered an impressive and appropriate
address to a large congregation.
The coffin was borne into and from the Church to the solemn strains
of dead marches played on the organ by Miss Malone.
The chief mourners were the six sons of the deceased:-- Rev. Charles
E. McQuaide, M.A.; Rev. John W. McQuaide, B.A.; Robert W. McQuaide,
Henry C. McQuaide, Thomas B. McQuaide, and Arthur C. McQuaide.
