Carlow
Soldier’s Narrative.
Incident of the Battle of Ypres
Lance-Coporal J. Hayden,
Royal Dublin Fusiliers, writing to his father in Burrin Street,
Carlow, from the Mill Lane Infirmary, Liverpook, gives a vivid account
of the long battles raging around Ypres. He tells of the sanguinary
bayonet chargers, etc., and devotes a larege portion of the letter to
the death of his brother, Paddy. He was speaking to his brother-who
had only left Cork a few days before-on a Saturday, and on the
following day, Sunday, was told that he had been killed. He afterwards
found his grave and placed a nice wooden cross over it, and put
flowers on it. The wrier was only 100 yards from his brothers grave
when he got wounded. He says the poison gas had not much effect on his
section of the force, and could not move them one inch, although they
lost a few hundred in that particular place.
Writing to a friend
in Carlow, he says that thousands have been lost in the battles around
Ypres, but Germans lost double.
