Our County, though small, has for Carlovians much that is
interesting and beautiful. We in An Taisce wish to depict in this
booklet some views of our Heritage in Carlow town. Through the
centuries man has used building materials, methods, and designs
which tell their own story to the observant eye. Growing towns need
change, but a balance must be kept between hurry for development and
nostalgia for the past.
Too often buildings of great merit are
demolished or left to disintegrate, and are replaced with houses or
offices with little to recommend them. The story told by many modern
housing estates in Ireland is a sorry one. It is surely possible
with imaginative planning and forethought to preserve and wherever
practical, to use existing architecture of historical interest,
while developing attractive new houses without the soul-less effect
presented by many urban housing estates of today.
Carlow has a
diversity of architectural styles and ages from 12th century,
through the Georgian and Victorian periods up to the present time.
An Taisce invites you to share our appreciation of our heritage of
buildings portrayed in this booklet, and to remind you of some which
have gone. We are most grateful to our generous supporters whose
help we so much appreciate.
