Carlow
On the 26th ult., an inquest was held by E. Gorman, coroner, on
the body of Patrick Nolan, a farmer residing at the quarry at
Moanmore, near Old Leighlin. It appeared from the evidence that
about five o'clock in the evening while deceased was in the act
of eating his dinner, a woman named Meany entered the house,
whom he pressed to eat; she left the house, the deceased
followed her calling on her to remain and when he returned to
the door he fell down and expired in a few minutes. A post
mortem examination was held on the body by Doctor Phillips, who,
on opening the windpipe, found two pieces of half-boiled
potatoes firmly wedged in the throat, which caused death; and
this the poor man fell a victim to his hospitality, as the
exertion of speaking cased the food to remain in the passage of
the throat, and no medical assistance being at hand he expired.
A verdict was returned according to the above facts.
