1816. Peace Recognizance.
George Scarf maketh Oath the he usually resides at Nockabran in the
Town-land of Nockabran in the Parish of Old Leighlin in the Barony of
West Idrone in the County of Carlow.

Thomas Scarf maketh Oath that he is a Householder and has a house
where he actually resides at Nockabran in the Town-land of Nockabran
in the Parish of Old Leighlin in the Barony of West Idrone in the
County of Carlow and that he is worth the sum of Twenty five Pounds
Sterling, over and above his just Debts -- and that he supports and
maintains himself by Farming.

Scarf maketh Oath that he is a Householder and has a house where he
actually resides at Coolcullen in the Town-land of Coolcullen in the
Parish of Mothal in the Barony of Tuthedine and in the County of
Kilkenny and that he is worth the sum of Twenty five Pounds Sterling,
over and above his just Debts -- and that he supports and maintains
himself by [blank].

Be it remembered that the above-named [ blank ] and every one of them
came in their proper Persons and severally and respectively
acknowledged themselves to be indebted unto our Sovereign Lord George
the Third, in the Sums to their Names respectively annexed, that is to
say,
- The said George Scarf in the Sum of Fifty Pounds.
- The said Thomas Scarf in the Sum of Twenty five Pounds.
- The said James Scarf in the Sum of Twenty five Pounds.
The Condition of the foregoing Recognizance is such, that if the above
bounden George Scarf shall appear at the Next General Assizes for the
County of Carlow and to attend the Court until discharged ~~~ shall
keep the Peace and be of good behaviour towards His Majesty's Liege
Subjects, and particularly towards [ blank] for the space of [blank]
Years, from the Day of the Date hereof, then the foregoing
Recognizance to be Void; otherwise to remain in full Force and Virtue
in Law.

1816.
The Examination of Mary McArdel of the Ridge of Old Leighlin,
Carlow ~~ Who being duly sworn upon the Holy Evangelists and
Examined saith that on the Night of Sunday the 16th Day of June
1816 she being in bed in her fathers house at the Ridge of Old
Leighlin a Number of Men came to the house and called her by very
opprobrious Names to come out till they would take her life~~~.
She did not open the Door being apprehensive of her life, but
going to a window (not Glazed) she looked out and Discovered a
Number of Men who told her that if she Did not leave the Place
before next Nights they would have her life ~~~
They threatened to Burn the House and they put a Paper under the
Door Containing a Notice for her immediately to Remove and Clear
off from the Place and threatening her if she did not.
After which they went to a new House which had been lately built
for her and threw Down the Walls of the said House in part.
And Mary McArdel further saith that among the said Men were Thomas
Scarf, Junior, George Scarf and John Redmond all of the Ridge of
Old Leighlin to whom she Positively swears and is positive that
they were in the party and also saith that to the best of her
knowledge Thomas Scarf, Senior and Jim Hughes of Knockbawn, were
also of the party and further saith that she is in Continual Dread
and fear of her life from the outrageous and threatening Behaviour
of the said party.

Taken before Reverend James Magrath one of his
Majestys Justices of the Peace for Carlow.
The Information of James Magrath of Cloonian
in the Parish of Dunleckney in the Barony of Idrone East in the County
of Carlow, Farmer.
Who being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelists
and examined deposeth and saith that on the evening of the 12th day of
June 1816 he served Patt Nowlan of Ballalow, Carlow, Labourer, with a
Magistrates Summons in order to bring Patt Nowlan before the Reverend
James Magrath, one of his Majestys Justices of the Peace for Carlow to
answer charges brought against Patt Nowlan and as soon as Patt Nowlan
received the Summons he swore most vehemently he would destroy him and
instantly took hold of the Summons server James Magrath and violently
assaulted him by kicking and dragging him through water and dirt and
declared he would suffer to be hanged in order to have satisfaction of
him.
James Magrath further saith that from the
treatment he got from Patt Nowlan he is in actual fear and terror of
being hurt by him. ~

James Magrath bound in the Sum of Five Pounds
Sterling to prosecute Patt Nowlan at the next General Sessions of the
Peace for Carlow.
