John Olehan maketh Oath that he usually resides at Kilcoltrim in the parish of Kiltennel in the Barony of Idrone East and County of Carlow and will appear in his proper person in open Court to prosecute John Stapleton of Ballinaslogue in Carlow for assault.

Paul Butler, Esquire, one of his Majesties Justices of the peace for Carlow.

The Information of Bridget Kearavan of Kilkea in the County of Carlow who being Sworn on the Holy Evangelists Say that on Thursday the 19th day of September last  Bridget being then and for some time previous thereto employed by Anne Clowry of Kilkea, Carlow was on the lands of Ballykealy, Carlow on her Mistress's Business was assaulted and Struck with a pitchfork without any provocation by Easter Nowlan of Kilkea, Carlow and that on Saturday following being the 21st Sept. she was waylayed on the land of Drunaugh between Ballykealy and Kilkea by Mary Murphy, Sister to Easter Nowlan, who then and there most violently assaulted and beat her [page torn].

She was obliged [ page torn ] Some time in consequence of such treatment.

The Examination of Maurice Doyle of Rathnageran, Carlow, Labourer, taken before John Cornwall, Esquire, one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for Carlow. Examinant being duly sworn and examined, deposeth and sayth that he being authorised by Mr Paul Troy of Rathnageran aforesaid, who is appointed by the Earl of Bessborough to take care of the Turbary Game on his Estate in Carlow, while attending to the Orders of Paul Troy on Monday the 29th day of January last he met with James Coogan of Knockindrane bringing Turf off the lands of Knockindrane when he (Maurice Doyle) produced his Authority and seized on the Horse and Car bearing the said Turf, in order to hinder him from taking the Turf off his Lordship's Estate, -- when and where the said Denis Coogan did forcibly rescue the same from the Custody of Maurice Doyle, altho' he showed Coogan his Authority for so detaining the Turf, and told him what the consequence of such resistance to the Laws would be ~~~

and further sayith not,

Taken and Sworn before me this 1st day of February 1811. John Cornwall.
Maurice Doyle bound in the sum of £10 to prosecute at the next General Sessions of the Peace.

The Information of James Darcy of Rutland, Farmer, taken before Charles Burton one of His Majestys Justices of the Peace for Carlow Who being duly Sworn on the Holy Evangelists and Examined saith that on Thursday the thirtyeth day of May last he went with a friend into the House of Andrew Moore of the Town of Carlow, Publican, to take part of a pot of beer - when and where he was unjustly insulted and abused by Margaret Moore, wife of Andrew Moore - who Immediately threw a jugg of hot Water into his face by which he was much Injuried and that he was so offended without Just Cause or Provocation ~~

[Note added 2012. Daphne Many may be Mahony. Thomas Gurly is ancestor of George Bernard Shaw, the Examination in Gurly's own hand has several misspellings (unusual for a Justice of the Peace) the writing is difficult to decipher.]

The Examination of Daphne Many wife to Edward Many of Castle Hill, Carlow, Land Survieyar,  who came before me this day and made oath on The Holy Evangelists on the 5th day of October that she, the said Daphne Many was upon her Lawfull occapaton returning from buying bread from a Baker when she was most furuously attacked by S..... [ ? ] Grace otherwise Shannon otherwise Helanasshy and after many Egregious Expressions assaulted the said Daphne Many by Throwing a half full Chamber Piss Pott in her face and at the same time told Louis Smyth of the Carlow Ca... who Interferd that she would Smear him in the same manner which obliges Daphne Many to Crave Justice and further sayth not~~

The Information of John Brodrick of the Town of Carlow, Tailor taken before William Browne, of Browne's Hill, Esquire, one of His Majestys Justices of the Peace for Carlow.

Informant John Brodrick who being duly Sworn on the Holy Evangelists and Examined Saith that on Monday the Eleventh day of November 1811 as Informant was at the Auction at the House of Thomas FitzGerald in Tullow Street he was most grossly Insulted and abused in the Presence of a Concourse of Persons then Present by Michael Connolly of the Town of Carlow ~ Shop Keeper ~ who without Just Cause or Offence gave Informant a blow of his fist on the face and said at the time -- take that you Drunken rascal ~, and at the Same time Clinched his fist at Informant with intent to ill treat him further and Would have done so if Informant had not left the Auction room ~

Recognizance.

John Darcy of Garryhill, Carlow, Tailor, acknowledged to be Indebted to our Sovereign Lord the King in the Sum of £10.

Richard Darcy of Rathnegeera, Carlow acknowledged to be Indebted to our Sovereign Lord the King in the Sum of £5.

Oliver Rafter of Garryhill, Carlow acknowledged to be Indebted to our Sovereign Lord the King in the Sum of £5.

The condition of the above is that the above bound John Darcy shall attend at the next General Sessions to be held at Carlow and answer such things as may then be alleged against him by Maurice Geehan, his Wife and Daughter then this recognizance to be Void and of no Effect otherwise to remain in full force and Virtue in Law.

Taken and Sworn before me this 6th day of March 1811.

To Keep the Peace.

Barnaby Lenon maketh Oath he usually resides in Ballyhubbuck in the Townland of Ballyhubbuck in the Parish of Dunleckney in the Barone of Idrone East in the County of Carlow. (signed) Barnaby Lenon.

Richard Taylor and John Nowlan maketh Oath that they are householders and actually reside in Ballyhubbuck and that they are worth the sum of 5 pounds sterling over and above just debts.

That is to say - Barnaby Lenon bonded to keep the Peace in the sum of £10.
