The
Carlow Sentinel, October 1847.
Sudden
death of a soldier.
One of
the soldiers of the 3rd Buffs, quartered in this town,
while dancing in a public house, belonging to a man
named Parkes, in Coal-market, on Tuesday evening last,
suddenly dropped on the floor, and on raising him it was
found that life was extinct. The young man was about
twenty four years of age, apparently strong and healthy,
but had dissipated habits.
The above is a true and
accurate transcript of the original document.

I was
sure that was the pub my grandfather had but on checking
the 1901 census I see the address given was 2 Castle
Hill. Can you tell me where that is?

Dinty Delaneys was on the corner
of College Street---Purcell's pub was at corner of Mill
Lane and Castle Hill .just above Coal Market ---.in the
1970s this was Ronnie Delaneys, which was beside John
Purcell’s of Castle Hill (Mrs Darcy with Mrs Ivory next
door.) across the road was the "stone-cutters" it is
now a gambling den....come to think of it in 1900 John
Purcell lived across the street, I think they took a
portion of his house to build the office section of the
Boot Factory.
