The Sad News in Carlow.
Death of Charles Parnell
MEETING: OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE.
The first, intelligence of
Mr. Parnell's death
was received in Carlow on the afternoon of Wednesday. It was at
first received with incredulity, but on confirmation of the
sorrowful news being received the supporters of the late Leader
in the town were literally overwhelmed with grief at the wholly
unexpected and mournful announcement.
We will not state the
untruth that the Seceders were affected by the intelligence of
the greatest Irishman's death; on the contrary, they seemed
jubilant over the fact that Providence had removed the man who
did untold service to his country and by his exertions saved
thousands of his countrymen from the horrors of famine.
On
Thursday and Friday the windows of all the Nationalists’
premises in the town were shuttered in respect to the memory of
Mr. Parnell. On Thursday evening a Special Meeting of the
Carlow, Tinryland and Bennekerry Branch of the Irish National
League was told in the Town Hall. There was a very large
attendance and the proceedings were charaterised with silent and
unobtrusive sorrow.
