Scoil Mhuire gan Smál is an all girls school, built in an urban environment, yet within walking distance of the wider countryside. Teachers live mainly in the locality and thus have the advantage of a good knowledge of the backgrounds of the pupils.

Scoil Mhuire is unique in the warm, caring, welcoming atmosphere which is tangible on entering the school. There are sixteen class teachers, four teachers for special educational needs and two language support teachers. Scoil Mhuire is very fortunate in having a caring, dedicated staff, committed to the holistic development and well-being of all children under their care. The staff work as a team under the guidance and direction of Margaret Keegan, principal.

The school was opened in 1960 as a replacement for the original Presentation Primary School, Tullow Street.

The Building Of Scoil Muire Gan Smal

In July 2010. workers on the renovation of Scoil Mhuire gan Smal found, hidden behind a press fitting, part of a Sweet Afton cigarette packet on which the following message was written "Patrick Hennessy and John Curran worked on these schools. Pray for us, 1959. Dan Carbery remembered these two workers very well and while they both passed away several years ago the handwriting on the packet was identified as belonging to John (Jakes) Curran by his son also John Curran.
