THOMAS and JANE WRIGHT came
to Ireland from Saffron Waldenn in 1649 (?). Their son
THOMAS, born in 1652, married MARY JONES, and settled in
Ballincur, Co. Wexford.
THOMAS and MARY WRIGHT
had 9 children: (1?) JOHN. 2 NEHEMIAH. 3 SAMUEL. 4
ELIZABETH. 5, HANNAH. 6 WILLIAM. 7 THOMAS. 8 JOSHUA. 9
THOMASINA.
The eldest son, JOHN
WRIGHT, born 3 Sept 1698, married MARGARET HILL, at
Ballinclay, Co. Wexford 28 July 1721. She was a widow,
her maiden name TAYLOR.
They had six children.
MARY, born 23 Nov. 172 – 2 MARGARET, born 15 Jan 172 – 3
ELIZABETH, born 15 Oct. 172 – 4 MARTHA, born 9 Dec 17 –
, died 1733. 5
JOHN, born 23 Feb 1731
6 MARTHA, born 25 March 1734.
She married JOHN
SMITHSON in 1761, and died 28th
Jan
1814.
JOHN
WRIGHT, second of the name, born 23 Feb 1731, married
ABIGAIL SMITHSON
17
and their
home was at Ballinclay, Co Wexford.
The different
generations of the WRIGHT family are rendered somewhat
confusing to their descendants by the constant
repetition of the same Christian names.
In old times it was
unusual, at least in the Society of Friends, to give
double names, and we find the same Christian names,
without change or addition, handed down from parents to
children & grandchildren and from uncles and aunts to
nephews and nieces.
Thus we find that
ABIGAIL (SMITHSON) WRIGHT had one daughter and seven
grand-daughters who bore her name.
And the three
eldest-sons of her second son, JOSEPH WRIGHT, who were
named respectively JOSEPH, JOHN, and JAMES, added the
letter [J] after their Christian names, no doubt as a
needful mark [illeg………] from others of the same name.
