Letter Written by Miss Alyce HOPKINS in Jan 1960. She is one of
the Daughters of the late William HOPKINS and Sarah
(Ballinll ? Salter) late of the Vallee Bray.
about 1750.
We know very little about our great Grandfather
Salter not even his name or his wife, but they lived in
Cloneen and our great grandfather Peter lived there until he had
a farm (Ballingowan).
He first married Miss Rose, and they had a daughter Anna.
(We know nothing about them, But Reilly, Ballybit,
remembered when a small child, hearing her mother say – I must
go see poor Annette Rose who ever she was.
Peter then married Anna WATSON, a quaker.
She came from Ballintranne.
They had a family, but we only know of
sun about
our grandfather John.
He married Sarah KEPPEL I write here the letter of
acceptance she wrote to him to accept his proposal.
From the original.
1827 Rathrush
Feb 5th
Dearest John,
I hope you will not attribute, my long silence to my
neglect, it proceed from want of time, as I was going from home
with my cousin Hopkins at the same time when I received your
letter.
As
yu
you required and answer, I therefore let you know that I could
have no objection, however if my parents be satisfied, I am also
well pleased.
Yours with Best Wishes,
Sarah KEPPEL
They married and had five children – Anna, Peter, Jane, Alicia,
Susan.
When
ale all young – I think Susan about 4 their mother died.
All children were scattered among relatives except Peter.
who went as weekly boarder to Rev. JAMISON, Carlow.
