Sir Richard Pierce
Butler, ninth Baronet, of Garryhundon, in the county of
Carlow, was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Butler, the eight
Baronet, by his wife, Frances, forth daughter of John Graham
Clarke, Esq., of Sutton in the county of York. He was born
on the 4th of March 1813, and married, the 28th of May,
1835, Matilda, second daughter of Thomas Cookson, Esq., of
Hermitage, in the county of Durham, by whom he has had issue
five sons and three daughters. He succeeded his father as
ninth Baronet on the 8th of November, 1861, and has thus
held the baronetcy only little more than a twelve month. He
died on the 22nd ult., and is succeeded by his eldest son,
now Sir Thomas Pierce Butler, the tenth Barnet, who was born
the 16th of December, 1836. This family of Butler is a
branch of the eminent house of Ormonde, and springs from Sir
Edward Butler, Knight, second son of James, ninth Earl of
Ormonde, Sir Edward’s lineal descendant, Thomas Butler,
M.P., was created a Baronet of Ireland on the 16th of
August, 1628. From him the baronetcy has passed from father
to son, without intermission, down to the Baronet who has
just succeeded.
