Death of Mr.
S. Reynolds
The sudden
death of Mr. Stan Reynolds, N.T., P.C., Ballylinan N.S., on Sunday
while reading the Epistle at Mass in the Church of St. Anne,
Ballylinan,
not only shocked the large congregation but also the people of Laois,
Carlow and Kildare who knew him so well.
A member of
an old and respected Carlow family he was aged 60 and was appointed
Principal of Ballylinan N.S. in 1944. He had earlier taught at Athy
C.B.S., Barrowhouse N.S. and Kilabban N.S.
He was a
highly competent teacher, fully dedicated to the Christian upbringing
of those placed under his charge. In the secular sphere he never
spared himself in fitting out his pupils for their future life, and
many of them have good reason to feel grateful for the training he
gave them.
He was a
zealous member of the Parish Council and the council's chief organiser
of fund raising and other events.
He had a
special talent for organising which reflected itself in the success of
all functions directed by him.
He was a
founder member of Ballylinan guild Muintir na Tire and a strong
supporter and promoter of Gaelic games. He was closely identified with
the social life of the district and was particularly interested in
music. He presented and produced many dramatic and musical evenings of
a very high standard locally, which were thoroughly enjoyed.
While
teaching in Athy he took an active part in the drama movement.
He was an
all-round sportsman in his earlier life. He played football with Clann
na Gael in Dublin while in training college. In Athy he was a member
of the tennis club and in his native Carlow was reckoned a first-class
handball and racquets player. He was a widower, his wife having
predeceased him by about four years.
He is
survived by his son, John, daughter, Maureen, brothers, Supt. Ed. A.
Reynolds, Asst Commissioner, Garda Siochana; Mr James Reynolds,
Carlow; sisters, Mrs Sorcha Stack, Dublin; Mrs Una Hayes, Dublin; Mrs
Roseline O'Brien, Carlow and the Misses .M. P. Reynolds and K.
Reynolds, Carlow.
Another
sister lives in the U.S.A.
