Lt Col William Henry THORNTON was the 5th generation THORNTON in Co Carlow.

Of his 16 children four died young with no heirs in Ireland. One died at age 36 in Co. Galway, but his children then moved to England. They left no lines in Ireland. The remaining 11 children removed to Australia, Channel Islands, Italy, England, USA,  Canada and South Africa in the 1840's and 50's, with his widow and younger daughters leaving last in 1865.

That ended the 7 generations of Thornton's in the Co Carlow area that had spanned the years 1659-1865 (206 years), and the 276 total years in Ireland that had started 1589 in Munster, three generations prior, for a total of 10 Irish generations. After Muster, they resided in Co. Limerick, but by 1595 they were in Coleraine, Londonderry, Ireland until my branch moved to Rathvilly, Co. Carlow, Ireland in 1659.  Several men of this family married Quakers during two or those ten generations.  The Colonel and his 16 children are well documented.
