Tullow &
Tullowcreen Co. Carlow
TULLOW (or TULLGPHELIM) SLATER’S 1894 TULLOW (or TULLGPHELIM)
is a market town and parish, part of the town being in the parish of
Fennagh, in the barony of Rathvilly, co. Carlow, head of a dispensary
district and petty sessional division, in the union of Carlow,
Protestant diocese of Leighlin, Catholic diocese of Kildare and
Leighlin, with a terminal station on a branch line of the Great Southern
and Western railway, 48 miles south from Dublin, 8 south-east from
Carlow, pleasantly seated on the banks of the Slaney and close to the
borders of Wicklow county.
The river is crossed by a bridge of five
arches, erected, according to an inscription on it, in 1767. The town
was once called Tullophelim, and conferred the title of viscount upon
two branches of the Butler family, both of which have been extinct for
many years, and the name as applied to the place has all but become
obsolete. The business of the town is confined chiefly to a spacious
market square and two streets, Bridge street and Mill street; there are
also a few other streets, consisting chiefly of inferior class of
houses. The Court house is spacious and quarter sessions for the barony
are held in it and petty sessions every 2nd Saturday. The other public
institutions are a fever hospital, with a dispensary attached, a
Protestant school, a convent and a monastery.
The members of both the
latter establishments receive boarders for education, and also
superintend gratuitously the instruction of the poorer children. A
branch of the National Bank is in the town. The places of worship are
the Protestant church and one belonging to the Catholics, the latter a
spacious structure, having three galleries and a lofty steeple. The
market, which is held on Saturday, is well attended ; fairs :— 20th
January, 21st February, 21st March, 21st April, 21st May, 10th June,
