Woolworths

From Kevin Avery.

F. W. Woolworth, 24/25 Tullow Street Carlow , Co Carlow , Ireland Store No 1128. When this Store opened in October 1967 there were High Hopes for it as it was to be one of the first Self Service Stores in the Republic of Ireland.
However, Woolworths seemed to have got it so wrong.. Eire was not ready for Self Service or at least Carlow was not. The Woolworth Store was not a hit in Carlow as it had been in nearby Kilkenny or Waterford. Tullow Street itself became a one way street in 1970 and the roadworks conducted to facilitate this caused tremendous problems for the local trade too. In nearby Portlaoise Powers Supermarket and Penneys Department Store were joining forces to create a massive Food and Drapery Store and this was opened by the end of 1971.
Woolworths threw in the towel, and on the 24th December 1971 the Store in Carlow was closed down just over 4 years from the date of opening
