Eric Butler
to represent Carlow at American music event

This article sent in by Mick Purcell Sept 05

A talented young singer/song-writer has been chosen to represent Carlow in a forth-coming musical extravaganza in Arizona.

Eric Butler, from Pollerton Little, will play at the Octoberfest Festival in Tempe, Arizona, next month.

He was the recipient of the Joe T Ford award from Carlow County Heritage Society for his promotion of the county's ties with the Arizona city.

He will now go on to represent the county at the major musical event in America when he flies out on September, 29, for a ten day visit.

Eric is classically trained on piano and played with bands like Phobia and the Cracked Bucket.

The Arizona appearance is not the first time that Eric has performed abroad as he has also been to China with the band, Anamcara. During his state-side trip, he will also get a chance to visit New York City.

He is the son of Derek and Mary Butler, also from Pollerton Little. As a singer/song-writer, he has been performing solo for the last number of years, when local fans could catch his gigs in the Carlovian and Cosmo Browne's.

The Joe T Ford Award is given to Carlow people for their work to promote heritage and culture, and is given by the Carlow Heritage Society.

The award was originally set up in 1990 and is named in honour of the American businessman whose family originally came from Carlow.

Previous recipients of the award include Gala Hutton, Garda Peter McConnon, Kevin Lacey, John Comerford and Liam Kelly.
