The building of the Swimming Club was overseen by the building firm of Dan Carbury with support of voluntary labour, guided by Mr. Harding of Tullow Street, Carlow circa 1942. He has the plans etc. for same. The base for the diving board remains intact on the Graiguecullen side of the barrow track. Last summer there were many young swimmers still swimming in this area, with the more adventurous diving from the new pedestrian bridge adjacent to the Swimming Club site, known locally and unofficially as the Jimmy Murnane Bridge. It is considered unsafe to dive from the bridge as sometimes the river might not be deep enough, but I suppose where there is danger there is challenge.

Model of the New Carlow Swimming Pool

The model of Carlow's new £40,000 swimming pool which is on display in Hadden's window, Tullow St., this week. Holding the model are assistants Tom Dunne and Horace Swift.

This is what the new Carlow Swim Pool will look like when the work now in progress is completed. The town’s present “facilities” for swimming are three rivers none of which have the approval of the medical authorities. The Swimming Pool Association informs us the toddlers pool will be completed simultaneously with the Olympic size large pool and dressing room accommodation for 360.

All of this of course depends on the response to the present fund raising efforts by the Association. They need £1500  for the toddlers pool and £2000 to complete local contributions to the larger venture. So far the larger contributions are Muintir na Tire; £250; matched by an anonymous donor. (another £250); Messr Crotty’s Bakers; £50  and Mercy Convent , £25. All subscriptions of any size are welcome.

This item appeared in the Nationalist on the 1st August 1969 and was discovered by Peter Walker c.2016

Graiguecullen Swimming Pool, Leighlin Road, is a modern facility situated in the historic building which was formally the old National School. A major local fundraising drive, under the leadership of Fr John Fingleton and Fr. Jim O' Connell, enabled the pool to be opened on the 1st June 1994. It is a fully heated, 25 metre public facility, where visitors are most welcome.

Killeshin Swimming Club:

This very successful Club was founded in 1982. At that time the Club had to travel to Athy Swimming Pool and quite a considerable amount of organisation and fund raising was necessary. Today in 1999, due to the foresight of Fr. John Fingleton P.P. and former Curate Fr. Jim O'Connell, the Club enjoys the wonderful facilities of Graiguecullen Indoor Heated Swimming Pool. The site for this Swimming Pool came about as a result of the amalgamation of the two primary schools in Graiguecullen, leaving a fine site for the development of a new Swimming Pool for Carlow and environs. Children from Killeshin Swimming Club attend formal lessons on Friday evenings. Children can continue in the Club when they progress to Secondary School. There is a modest membership fee. Instruction is provided by qualified instructors and a host of voluntary committee members are on hand to help in every way possible. Full details may be obtained from any committee member.
