DEATH OF MR M. MINCHIN. - Mr. Michael Minchin, a very old
colonist, died at his residence, Grenfell-street, on
Tuesday. The deceased who was a native of Carlow, Ireland,
arrived in the colony some 60 years ago. He took up land at
the spot where the Maid of Auckland Hotel now stands on the
South-road, and fallowed farming pursuits. Later on he went
to Flagstaff Hill, and there he remained for about 20 years.
He had 14 children - 11 sons and 3 daughters - but only two
are living (Mr. John Minchin, of Nailsworth, and Mr.
Matthew Minchin, of Wilcania.
The remains were interred in the Roman Catholic Cemetery,
West-terrace, pm Wednesday. Father Murphy officiated at the
grave, and Mr. J. B. Siebert carried out the funeral
arrangements.
