O'Brien, Michael 1873

Nenage Guardian, 12th May 1873
The death took place lately of a rather remarkable character
named Michael O'Brien, a native of the Parish of Tomgraney,
Co. Clare, and a claimant to the extinct Marquisate of
Thomond. Through Clare generally, he was well known as the
Marquis of Thomond. He had attained his 80th year, was able
to walk several miles in a day, and possessed a ready wit
and a considerable fund of family lore. In stature he was
under middle size, his countenance was intelligent, and in
manners and in bearing, one would suppose that he had come
of gentle blood. It is however, believed, that such
parchments as he possessed belonged to the Mac. I. Briens of
Arra, the last of whom was killed by a fall from a horse
near the Bridge of Killaloe. Michael O'Brien appears to have
got a paralytic fit in the streets of Scariff, and to have
been brought into the Workhouse where he died later.
