HISTORY: LISTOWEL - 1824 PIGOT DIRECTORY

In the county of Kerry, and pleasantly situated on a
gentle declivity of the banks of the Feale, is a well-built
clean little town, 134 miles south west of Dublin, 17 and
a quarter north north east of Tralee, and 33 north of
Killarney. The church being built in the centre of a neat
square has an imposing effect, which is increased by the
externally neat, yet elegant appearance of the structure,
and well proportioned spire. The tithes, which are
impropriate, belong to Thomas Staughton (?), Esq. of
Ballyhorgan. The Catholic chapel, also situate in the
square, is a capacious modern building with a handsome
simple exterior, well becoming a religious edifice. Here
stands an ancient castle, which was the last that stood
out for the lord of Kerry against Queen Elizabeth; it is
now in ruins. Fairs are held twice every month. It enjoys a
charter for markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays; the
principal one is held on the latter of these days. The
population may be computed at about 1500.
