Taylor CEMETERY: BALLYSHANNON CHURCHYARD [From Lord Walter FITZGERALD] "A Modern Protestant Church stands in this old, though small. churchyard. The ancient church was dedicated to St. James the Apostle. There are no monuments in it of any interest: and though members of the ANNESLEY family who succeeded the FITZGERALDS in Ballyshannon at the end of the seventeenth century. were interred in a vault under the church, there is no memorial to any of them. 'The oldest headstone bears the following inscription:- This stone was Er'd by Catrine FLANAGA' in memory of her father, Nacelas Mc*GRAW who depart'd this life Dec'r the 24th 1752. Age'd 56 & his Wife Mary, Also Joseph MURY CEMETERY: CARRICK CHURCHYARD [From Lord Walter FITZGERALD] "Close beside the ruins of the Bermingham Castle of Carrick lies an extensive burial-grounds in which stand the runs of a long narrow church. Most of the west end, which is topped by a belfry, and of the south wall, are still standing. In the latter are two ogge-headed windows, one with a square drip-stone over it of single lights; these are the only remains of cut-stone work now existing in the ruins. The east end is railed off and appropriated by the family of HUMPHRY BOR who died in 1836 of Ballindoolin, which is a neighbouring townland. With one exception the tombstones inside the church ruins are all modern. The exception is a slab with the inscription down its length; it reads:- [NOTED: Wording is either side of a cross w/IHS under it] This is erected by Dennis KENEDY & his Posterity in Memory of his son Maurice KENEDY who died Jan'y 19, 1756 Aged 2 y'rs and also John CURRIN 'The remainder is hid underground.' The following inscriptions are copied from slabs and headstones on the south side of the burial-ground:- DAN . SM ITH . 1679 'This is incised:- _____________ HERE LIETH THE BOFY OF | HVGH SCVLLY (SCULLY) WHO | DEPARTED THIS LIFE | IVLY Y'E 14 1729 IN Y'E 56 YEARS OF HIS AGE | AND ALSO 4 OF HIS GRAND | CHILDREN PATRICK JOHN | ANN & MARY HINDS. | MILES HINDS CHILDREN _____________________________ [Noted: Inscription either side of a large cross with IHS under it] Here lies the Body of Daniel McROBIN who departed this life Janr'y 1777 Aged 87 y'rs also his wife Catherine SHAW departed Dec'r 1764 Aged 63 years also their son John McROBIN depart ... 'The remainder is underground.' ________________________ [Noted: Inscription either side of a large cross with IHS under it] This stone was erected by Richard BOORK for him and his Posterity.Here lyeth y'e Body of Mary BOORK his daughter departed this life Oc'ber y'e 15 1789 in 29 year of her age. _______________________________ Here lyeth the Body of William KENEDY who departed this life Mar'ch y'e 27 1735 aged 78 years. 'More of the inscription is under the surface.' ____________________________ The remainder of the inscriptions are copied from some of the older headstones on the west side of the the burial ground :- This stone is erected in memory of Edmund WOLLAGHAN and Catherine WOLLAGHAN late of Derrygart. Catherine WOLLAGHAN died ye 29 Apr 1731 Aged 86. Edmund WOLLAGHAN died May ye 16 1733 aged 89 years. __________________________________ HERE LYETH THE BODY OF EDMUND GVRKAN (GURKAN) WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE MARCH YE 2 1725 AGED 77 YEARS AND MARGRET WOLAGHAN HIS WIFE WHO DEPARTED YE 10 OF FEB'RY 1725 AGED 70 YEARS. ___________________________________ + IHS PRAY FOR THE SOLVE OF [ROSE'e] RVS WHO DYE'D THE 4 OF APRIL ~ ANO DOINI 1717 'The above inscription is cut on a headstone close to a more modern one belonging to the RISH family.' ____________________________ Here lyeth the body of Willaim McCOWAR departed this life March ye 25 1739 Aged 56 years.
