Taylor CEMETERY: KILDANGAN CHURCHYARD [From Lord Walter FITZGERALD] 'This old burial ground is situated near the farm buildings belonging to Kildangan Castle, the property of Dominick MORE-O'FERRALL, Esq. who inherited it through his mother, the only child of Dominick William O'REILLY, Alderman of Dublin, the purchaser of the place. The Castle of Kildangan, a strong square building which belonged to the FITZGERALDS of ALLEN in the sixteenth century was pulled down in 1884 and the present QueeN Anne style of the mansion was erected on its site. There are now no remains of the old church, nor do there appear to be any headstones of a date earlier than the eighteenth century. On a square granite stone is inscribed' :- + IHS Here lyeth the Body of Thomas CULLENAN who departed this life January 27th, 1727 [1787]and in the 79th year of his age [Note: Year unreadable in image] ___________________________ 'On a small flat slab sunk in the ground' :- Here lieth the Body of James BOWES who departed this life the 17th of Septr 1772 Aged 50 yrs. Good Travellers who chance to Pas[s] this way Fail not for my Departed Soul to Pray ______________________________ 'On a fractured slab' :- Here lieth the Body of Ann WHITE who departed this Life in the 29th ..... 1797 Aged 51 years. Amen _________________ 'In the north-eastern portion of the burial- ground is a railed in space at one end of which is a handsomely cut limestone length wall in which is a recess containing a terra-cotta urn on which is inscribed':- DEDICATED BY DOM'k WIL'm O'REILLY. Esqr to the MEMORY of his wife ELIZABETH Daughter of Henry FERRELL, Esqr. She DIED at BRISTOL THE 6TH OF MAY 1789 IN THE 25 YEAR OF HER AGE. [Scrolling] Though called away in the BLOOM of LIFE SHE was mature with every accomplishment That could render her SUPREMELY DEAR TO PARENT, CONSORT, CHILD & FRIEND. Hinc illae Lacrymae 'On the pedestal of the urn appears to be the COADE LONDON, 1790. And on the base of the monument is cut' :- This Monument was Erected by Dominick Wm O'REILLY, Esqr A.D. 1790 ____________________________________________ 'In the south-eastern corner of the burial-ground is a walled-in enclosure (choked with ivy, briars and elders) at one end of which are two table-tombs, one slab of which is smashed and fallen from its supports. The inscriptions read as follows':- To the Memory of Frederick William HOYSTED, Esqr, late Lieutenant Colonel of Foot he died at Kilboggin on the 26th of February 1818 Aged 59 years -------------- This Monument was Erected to the Memory of John HOYSTED. Esqr of Walterstown, County Kildare who departed this life the 28 of March 1848. As a tribute of the deepest love, respect and gratitude of his loving wife, Charlotte HOYSTED. Blessed are they that fall asleep in Jesus ____________________________________________ 'At the opposite end of this enclosure is a mural limestone tablet inscribed' :- The Burial Ground of Steven RICE, Cherry Mills A.D. 1795. CEMETERY: ST. BRIGID'S CATHEDRAL [From Lord Walter FITZGERALD] 'Among several slabs and monuments which were removed from the interior of the Cathedral at the time of its restoration, are two small thick slabs which appear to have been inserted in the walls; their lettering was lightly incised and the inscriptions are now difficult to decipher; they read as follows':- HERE LYETH YE BODY OF HENRY LYNDALL DECEASED YE 8 DAY OF APRILAND SARAH LYNDALL DECEASED YE 21 OF APRIL 1688 ------------------- HERE LYETH THE BODY OF VSSHER BELLWOOD HE DEPARTED THIS 14 DAY OF IANUARY 1694 'In the word "Ussher" the H and E are conjoined.'
