BAPTISMS AND MARRIAGES, BORRIS-IN-OSSORY RC, Leix

Below are extractions I did of 32 baptisms and 3 marriages
from the filmed parish register of Borris-in-Ossory Catholic
parish [FHL 0926188]. The area covered in these records
lies in western County Laois, along the border with
Tipperary and *ROUGHLY* between the towns of
Borris-in-Ossory (on the north) and Rathdowney (on the
south) and to the west of Clogh.

Actually, most of these records are from what, at the time,
was the Catholic parish of Skirke. But they appear as the
earliest records on FHL 0926188 (registers of the Catholic
parish of Borris-in-Ossory, Leix, Ireland). A quick summary
of parish history explains why this is so.

In 1840, the Catholic parish of Skirke was formed from part
of Rathdowney Catholic parish. In 1855, Skirke was merged
with parts of Rathdowney and Aghaboe Catholic parishes to
form the Catholic parish of Borris-in-Ossory. So, even
though Borris-in-Ossory Catholic parish was not formed until
1855, the "Borris-in-Ossory" Catholic records on FHL film
0926188 begin in 1840. The records for Borris-in-Ossory thus
predate the formation of the parish because those early
records are actually for the independent Catholic parish of
Skirke, which later became part of the new Catholic parish
Borris-in-Ossory when it was formed in 1855. In 1875,
Skirke was detached from Borris-in-Ossory, with part being
restored to Rathdowney and the rest permanently annexed to
Borris-in-Ossory. [For further details, consult "The History
and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory", by Rev. William
Carrigan, Vol. II, published in 1905 - all volumes available
on CD from Eneclann. A few pertinent details from there
appear at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/catholic/catholic_parishes.
htm.]

Spellings are as I read them from the parish registers -
"uncorrected" except for my comments in square brackets.
Sometimes no townland of residence was listed.

Also included below are my comments in square brackets [ ];
they can include alternate spellings of townland and other
comments. In particular, I have tried to include the
official townland spelling in cases where the spelling in
the register differs from the official Ordnance Survey
spelling (i.e., the name as it appears on O.S. maps). Be
aware, however, that the spelling used among people locally
in Ireland might not be the official O.S. spelling that
appears on maps!

I have retained the order in which the entries appeared in
the filmed register, although there might have been many
entries between each one listed below. The extractions below
includes primarily the surnames Dunn or Dunne and Purcell
(and variant spellings). However, I have not extracted all
entries from the film for these surnames, and many other
surnames are the primary surnames in the records below. I
hope these help someone make a connection.

My interest in the area is primarily in the surnames
Kavanagh, Harrold (Harold) and Keyes, and some of the
listings below might have connections to those families. For
example, some of the Purcells below might connect to either
my Harold or Keyes families - or both! But mostly, I have no
proven connection (yet) to any of the particular families
mentioned below.
