(8) p22 [ BALLINGLOGHY PARISH] ========================================================================= OLD PROPRIETOR TOWNLAND GRANTEE ========================================================================= Sir Maurice Hurley of Carrigahany Oliver Ormsby Kilduff (9) Waste William Fitton (10) Crumwell Ben Burton (8) This Barony included the ancient territory of the O'Ciarmhaic [O'Kerwick, anglicised Kirby] of Aine Cliach, who were subject to and paid tribute to the kings of Cashel. the earls of Desmond acquired this district at a comparatively early date and made it almost an independent county and thus it came to be called the "Small County" of Limerick. (9) The O'Hurleys possessed considerable landed property in the east of Limerick county for several centuries. Maurice Hurley of Knocklong and Kilduffe, who died in 1637, according to an inquistition taken early in the reign of Jame I, held Knocklong. Hammonstown, Longstone etc in free [socage] from Gibbon Fitzgibbon, Macatan Riddery; also Ballyscadane and Rathellan. From the White Knight he held the townland of Glanlarie Kilduff Castle near Pallasgrean and other denominations of land, he held by patent from the king. Maurice was succeeded by his eldest son, Thomas, whose son, Sir Maurice, now lost forever the family estate. (10) William Fitton of Aney was grandson of one of the undertakers of that name [see Journal No. I. p. II]. Sir Edward Fitton had a grant of 12,000 acres and jis nephews, Richard and Alexander 3,000 acres of the Desmond estates. Sir Edward held Glenogra Castle and the lands, on lease from Sir George Bourchier of Lough Gur and was high sheriff of the county in 1598. We find. now after a lapse of little more than fifty years, these lands again confiscated and granted to the Cromwellian adventurers. p22 [KILTEELY PARISH] ========================================================================== OLD PROPRIETOR TOWNLAND GRANTEE ========================================================================== Sir M Hurley Carrigkittle Oliver Ormsby Bishop of Emly Kildrumin Bishop's land Waste p22 [KILFRUSH PARISH] ========================================================================== OLD PROPRIETOR TOWNLAND GRANTEE ========================================================================== Sir M Hurley Kilfrush John Bullenfreffle Ballycarowney Thos. His son was created earl of Bellamont by Wiliam III for his services. The Cootes of Ash Hill, Killamock and Mount Coote are descended from his younger brother Chidley Coote, a lieut-colonel in Cromwell's army. (12) Donogh O'Grady of Kilballyowen got the title to his estate confirmed by James I. He died in 1653 leaving by his wife, a daughter of Sir Thomas Brown of Camas, a son, Darby Kilballyowen who married Faith, daugter of Sir Thomas Standish who had a grant of the de Lacy estate aboy Bruff. This James Rawley or Raleigh was said to be uncle to Sir Walter Raleigh. He built a spacious castellated mansion close to the river Camogue, in the parish of Cahercorney, adjoining Lough Gur on the townland, still retaining his name-Rawleystown. Ellen Rawley, widow of Richard of Rawleystown, was a daughter of Lacy of Bruff; she and her children, Edward and Margaret, held considerable landed property in this and the adjoining parishes, all now confiscated. Near relatives, Richard and Edmond Raleigh of Ballynamona Castle, also lost their estates which adjoined those of O'Grady of Kilballyowen, with whom Edmond had a dispute and in a duel with swords cut off O'Grady's arm. This was Thomas, eldest son of Darby O'Grady of Kilballyowen. Among those transplanted gentry from the county of Limerick are to be found the names of Edmund Rawley of Rawleystown, and edmond and Richard Rawley of Ballynamona. Walter Rawley was not an uncommon name in this district up to a recent date. p26 [KILKELLANE PARISH] ========================================================================== OLD PROPRIETOR TOWNLAND GRANTEE ========================================================================== Mahown & Ellen Grady Killkillane Richard Coote Same, waste Bog of ye same DO 1/4 proffitable Teige and Darby Grady, The south half of R.
